The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Each time a significant prize-giving event nears, there’s always a clamor for introducing fresh award types to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications successfully include many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, however the design behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
