In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the New Political Agreement
According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's older political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Political Discussions Taking Place
In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
