Australia's captain Set to Play a Key Part in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on November 21 in Perth.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the likelihood of being involved.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, not just his injury, but other factors as well," he commented.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of three Australian summers in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to make the squad for the contest.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and stated that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the first Test as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
